Once you’ve adjusted to life outside the corporeal, we hope at some point you’ll pause briefly, just once, and consider what went before. Celebrate the fact that before departing, you paid down all your debts, set aside some inheritance for those who would invest after you, perhaps even conferred some useful investment principles for your descendants to mimic. The riches that you have extended down your family tree—mere earthly riches though they be—will go on to support the scholarship, creativity, and daring of your offspring. Sure, it’ll also allow a few ne’er-do-well relations to drink Long Island iced tea through a straw and live recklessly among the sands and flowers of the Côte d’Azur. But the sum total of your monetary gifts will be a big, fat positive in the lives of many others. We give thanks for you. And we hope you’ll say a few brief otherworldly words in support of us as well, and all the Fools still toiling down here—we would all appreciate it.

OK, you actually are still breathing for now, and you’ve paid down your debts and set aside money that you can afford to do without for at least five years. And you know enough to feel comfortable doing so, whatever the different sorts of pitches the stock market will be tossing at you in the coming decades. A 25 percent decline next year? Eight years during which the total value of your investments fails to grow? A market crash tomorrow morning? Yes?
